Then the two went over everything that happened on the road and how they recognized him when he broke the bread. Luke 24:35 The MSG
Did you know you can be a believer and never really grow in your walk with God? I should know because that was me for many years. I attended church, went to bible studies but the depth of my walk with God wasn’t growing until God shook my foundation.
In the story of the road to Emmaus in Luke’s gospel account, it tells us about two of Jesus’ followers that had just experienced the shaking of their foundation. What they thought about Jesus and who is he was had crumbled to the ground with his crucifixion. They were sad. They were dismayed. They were dumbfounded with his body’s disappearance. Then, as they walked miles away from Jerusalem onto Emmaus, Jesus appears hearing their downtrodden hearts but their eyes were glazed over from seeing Him yet. As the day grew late, they invited the “Man” that had joined them on the road to come to dinner.
As Jesus began to break the bread, the believers eyes were opened to see the Risen Savior.
I have to say I was intrigued when reading this, “they didn’t recognize him until he broke the bread.”
So what exactly does it mean to “break the bread? Jesus said this is my body broken for you, take and eat.
The breaking of the bread represents his death – the price he paid for our sins and our death to ourselves – our ways.
He had risen but wasn’t recognized by those around him until he broke bread. I believe that is true for us too.
People will not recognize Jesus in us until we choose to rise up from our sins, die to ourselves and choose life in Him.
You can be a church goer, a TV ministry watcher, bible app reader and the most dedicated church volunteer but that doesn’t guarantee that people will see Jesus in you.
It takes a conscious choice to rise up each day and put God at the center of everything you do. This example of living in the spirit rather than our sinful flesh will change lives around you just like Jesus did for the two gentlemen he broke bread with that day.
So let me ask you, “Do those in your life see Jesus when they see you? If they don’t, then it may be time to rise up from the sin you are sitting in and begin to build your life on Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life.
Continuing to walk in sin leads to death but walking in the spirit leads to life. It’s your choice. It’s mine too.
Let me encourage you to choose life!!!
Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:5-6
